MY MUSES
MEDIUM: PHOTOGRAPHY
“Alponse Mucha was a famous artist of the 18/19th century, known for his luscious portrayal of beautiful women in nature. However his subjects, his muses - which he often also photographed - were strangers to him. Unlike other artists he was not inspired by the magic of their character, they were simply bodies, anatomy for him to draw upon. (He often covered the face of his naked female model with a cloth, women unnerved him). In my photographs, I have done the opposite. My subjects are chosen not for their bodies but for who they are to me and how they personally inspire me. My muses are my friends - because of them I create magic. Moreover, their uniqueness influences their own pose and image - the control and narrative is not solely in my hands as photographer - it should be equal, this muse-artist relationship. In these photographs I have emulated the artistic landscape and signatures of Mucha, referencing some paintings directly, however the artist-muse relationship is indisputably different.”
