AUERBACHIAN REVELS

Oh but who can begrudge
Icarus his joy in soaring higher and higher
One finger outstretched, aiming toward the life giver
He who had never known a mother

Who could not forgive
The dry and scratching cervix
Its murderous hunger for beauty
Bearing down on us all

Would I not lay down all I have ever had
To give what his flesh could not give him
Would not I, too, abandon my bones
Even the better ones, that are not even guilty

For it is not the fall that constitutes a soul
But the craning towards the light
The careening towards the abyss
Flap flap little wings this won’t make you the devil
