HIDDEN/UNBORN

blackout poetry, extracted from ‘The Nightingale’s Nest’ by John Clare (1793-1864)

softly
she dwells here
hush! the fear
might drive her home.
for I’ve heard
at morn, at eve,
she is
all

bluebell flowers
laughing through mossy rails -
hunted
through matted thorn
see her feed

hidden unborn.
and I’ve
watch’d her while she sung
marvel

her wings tremble in ecstasy,
feathers stand on end,
mouth wide open
sobbing

the timid bird
lost
again
